Well, it’s been a while since I posted but the Indians are now on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time in quite some time. Despite the mediocre August, they have one of the best records in the second half and with Fausto Carmona and C.C. Sabathia throwing well, I like out chances as we head into the post season. The magic number is now three and my prediction is we clinch it on Sunday.
What a way to do it too by burying the Tigers. And at this point, only a half game seperates the three division leaders so at this point, the Indians first round opponent could be anyone.
Team MVP has to go to Victor Martinez. Not only has he gotten it done with the stick, but his defense has improved quite a bit from last year. Last year, according to Baseball Prospectus, he cost the Indians 20 runs more then average catcher would. That’s two wins in the standings. This year, he’s at just -1 overall but at catcher, he’s actually been above average.
Grady Sizemore has turned it up as well and he could reach 100 walks for the first time in his career. It’s not see him developing into the leadoff man the Indians need. Yes, his batting average and slugging are down, but he’s getting on base which is what we need. If only he’d be a little more effecient when he was trying to steal a base. He’s been caught 10 times in 43 chances. That’s about where a player needs to be to not hurt his team by endning potential rallies.
And C.C. Sabathia should win the Cy Young. He has all of the numbers and while he doesn’t even lead his team in ERA, he’s still in the top ten.
So we have a week and a half left before those playoffs start. Hopefully some players get some rest for the big October stretch drive.
