The Indians have been trying to negotiate a contract with Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia. Talks have been haulted and according to Mark Shapiro are not expected to continue until after the 2008 season. This means that the Indians will have Sabathia this year, but after that is still undecided.
The Indians are trying to land C.C. Sabathia to a long term deal. This task is going to be more difficult now, Johan Santana agreed to a 137.5 million, six year contract with the Mets. With the extended publication of the enormous contract throughout the United States, there is a good chance that Sabathia has heard about it. The fear is that Sabathia will ask for too much money. There is no way of knowing, until it happens.
When are the Indians going to make a deal? The season is closing in fast and during the off-season the Indians have yet to bring in a new face. The Indians have not left their farm system in search of talent, all moves have been made from inside the organization. What does this mean for the 2008 Indians? It means that you have virtually the same lineup that you saw in the World Series last year. Obviously this team is a contender, but they may have some difficulty dealing league rivals, such as the Tigers (who signed Dontrelle Willis, Miguel Cabrera, Edgar Renteria and Freddy Guzman). The Indians are going to have to prove, with the same set of players, that last year was not a fluke.
